JULAU: Two villagers sustained injuries when a fire razed a 15-door longhouse in Ulu Merurun, here yesterday afternoon.

Fire and Rescue Department (Bomba) Bintangor chief Nicholas Belulin said a team was dispatched to the scene following a distress call at 5.04pm, but was unable to prevent the blaze from reducing the structure to
ashes.

“When we reached the scene, the entire longhouse was already gutted,” he said, adding the scene of the fire was about 100 kilometres away.

Julau police chief DSP Bidol Noyeng later identified the two injured villagers as a husband and wife, adding the pair suffered burns to their back while trying to salvage their belongings.

“They were sent by villagers to a nearby clinic, and later referred to Sibu Hospital for further medical attention,” he said.

Yesterday’s longhouse fire was the third this past week, following one in Sungai Keriok, Niah on Nov 24 and another in Sungai Asap, Belaga on Nov 19.
