BINTULU: Longhouse folk are responsible for ensuring that the wiring system of their respective unit is in good condition, says Utilities Minister Dato Sri Dr Stephen Rundi.
He points out that while Syarikat Sesco Berhad (Sesco) supplies electricity to premises that have achieved the designated electrical installation safety standards, it is down to the villagers to ensure their wiring system remains sound.
“It is the responsibility of the longhouse residents to ensure that the electrical wiring system remains in perfect condition.
“Faulty electrical wiring can be avoided because Sesco has set a special standard before the premises is connected to the electricity supply facility.
“However, villagers must make sure there is no illegal electrical connection to avoid untoward incidents,” he said.
Some of the affected residents are currently staying in a temporary shelter erected near the razed longhouse.
The Kemena assemblyman was speaking to reporters during a visit Sunday to the fire victims of Rumah Usek Sumpit in Sungai Keriok, Niah where he handed over RM76,000 in aid to those affected.
The fire on Nov 24 razed the 38-door longhouse and left some 300 homeless.
Of the RM76,000 in aid, RM46,000 was from Dr Rundi and RM30,000 from Deputy Chief Minister Datuk Amar Douglas Uggah.
Each household will receive RM2,000.
According to Dr Rundi, 18 longhouse fires have been recorded across the state as of this month, with his ministry viewing the matter seriously especially those where faulty wiring was found to be the cause.
He added he would liaise with Uggah, who is also Sarawak Disaster Management Committee chairman, on other forms of assistance that can be channelled to the affected longhouse residents.
Meanwhile, Tuai Rumah Usek Sumpit extended his gratitude to the Sarawak government and other relevant parties for the support and assistance rendered to those affected.
