SIBU: Those who fail to settle their assessment rates by Dec 31 this year will face legal action by Sibu Rural District Council (SRDC).

Council chairman Sempurai Petrus Ngelai said defaulters can consider this as a ‘final warning’ for them to settle their bills or face being hauled to court.

“SRDC has been giving ample time for them to settle their outstanding bills (but they have not done so) despite many notices and calls urging them to pay up.

“We have to take this drastic action to ensure they pay,” he told reporters after chairing a full council meeting here yesterday.

Sempurai said SRDC has only managed to collect RM397,000, or 17 per cent, from the total arrears of RM2.3 million up until October this year.

On a separate matter, he urged the public to report theft or destruction of bulk bins to the council, so that replacement bins can be given out.

He said SRDC has received 10 such reports of bulk bins being burned by irresponsible individuals from January till September this year.
