Petronas leaders and staff celebrating the achievement of Pengerang Integrated Complex’s highest safe man-hours of 120 million.
KUCHING: The Pengerang Integrated Complex (PIC), Petroliam Nasional Bhd’s (Petronas) largest downstream investment, created history by achieving the highest safe man-hours of 120 million, entering the Malaysia Book of Records under the “Human Achievements” category.
The incident-free man-hours was clocked from March 18, 2018 to November 5, 2018.
The momentous occasion was celebrated in the presence of Petronas president and group chief executive officer Tan Sri Wan Zulkiflee Wan Ariffin, executive vice president and chief executive officer downstream, Datuk Md Arif Mahmood, PRPC senior vice president and chief executive officer Dr Colin Wong Hee Huing and representatives from Petronas and EPCC.
Speaking at the event, Wong said the achievement is a tangible result of PIC’s on-going commitment to safety and the stringent safety processes.
“This is a historic milestone, and recognition must go to every individual working in PIC for this remarkable achievement. The success is especially meaningful as we have a multinational workforce of more than 65,000 people, working in environments that often pose extreme safety and security risks.
“But what matters most for us, at the end of the day, everybody goes home safely to their families,” he added.
In continuously maintaining a safe work environment, PIC’s Health, Safety, Security and Environment Team has rolled out a comprehensive Health, Safety and Environment (HSE) Management Plan comprising many unique initiatives, including Rewards and Recognition, Consequence Management, Life Critical Activities, focused work groups and Area Based Safety programme.
As the PIC enters commissioning phase, 13 mandatory requirements, developed based on Petronas’ and national legal standards and requirements, are in place as part of HSE in operations.
The implementation will be standardised across all project packages during Start-up and Performance Tests to ensure that all HSE risks are efficiently identified, assessed and controlled.
PIC is developed by Petronas Refinery and Petrochemical Corporation (PRPC), a wholly-owned subsidiary of Petronas and is positioned to be the regional downstream oil and gas industrial hub, paving a new frontier of technology and economic development in the Southeast Asia region.
As at October 2018, the PIC has achieved 96 per cent progress and is on-track for start-up in Quarter 1, 2019.
The refinery, which has a refining capacity of 300,000 barrels of crude per day, will produce a range of refined petroleum products, including gasoline and diesel that meet Euro 5 fuel specifications.
Additionally, the refinery will provide feedstock for the integrated petrochemical complex within the PIC, which has the capacity to produce 3.3 million tonnes per annum.
The Refinery and Petrochemical Integrated Development (RAPID) project under PIC is operated by Pengerang Refining and Petrochemical (PRefChem), a strategic alliance between Petronas and Saudi Arabian Oil Company, Saudi Aramco, through equal partnership in two joint venture (JV) companies.
The PIC is further supported by associated facilities comprising a co-generation plant, an LNG re-gasification terminal, a raw water supply plant, a deep water terminal, and air separation unit, as well as centralised and shared utility facilities.
