SPM student killed after being hit by car at roadside stall

SANDAKAN: A 17-year-old girl passed away before she could sit for her last Sijil Pelajaran Malaysia (SPM) paper yesterday after she was hit by a car at around 3.30 pm near Sri Taman at Mile 3½ here on Tuesday.

Fire and Rescue Department Sandakan said that the victim has been identified as Sofiona Achor who lived in Block 11 of Sri Taman.

The victim and her three other siblings were at a stall selling cakes and pastries at the roadside in front of Sri Taman mosque, when the driver of a Hyundai car lost control of the vehicle and rammed into the stall.

Sandakan police chief, ACP Mohd Azhar Hamin, confirmed the case and said that the severely injured victim was sent to the Duchess of Kent Hospital where she passed away at 4.40 am yesterday.

Mohd Azhar did not reveal the identity of the car driver, and said that the case is being investigated under Section 41 (1) of Road Transport Act 1987.

According to the deceased’s family friend, Arninah Arbain, the deceased and her siblings were closing up their stall at the time of the incident.

Members of the public who witnessed the incident are asked to contact investigating officer, Nurwati Ismail at 089-242254 to facilitate investigation.
