SIBU: A 100-foot Christmas tree – the centrepiece of Sibu Town Square this year – was lighted up on Monday evening.

The lighting-up ceremony was jointly officiated by Sibu Municipal Council (SMC) chairman Datuk Tiong Thai King, his wife Datin Wong Mee Sing, council deputy chair Rogayah Jamain, Sarawak Chinese Annual Conference (SCAC) president Rev Dr Tie King Tai and event organising chairperson Kapitan Connie Loh.

Loh later told reporters that this year’s Christmas tree is the tallest to be put up by the council in recent years.

“This season is not just about religion. It is also about spreading love and peace to all,” she said.

Surrounding the centrepiece are many other Christmas trees put up by contestants of the Christmas Tree Decoration Contest organised by SMC.

Loh said the panel of judges had already looked at the entries and will announce the winners on Dec 31 during the annual New Year countdown.

This year’s contest received 12 entries – all from the local chapters of Lions Club International.

The contest is held under the patronage of Tiong, who is also Dudong assemblyman
