KUCHING: An injured Japanese researcher was successfully airlifted by the Fire Rescue Special Air Services Unit (PASKUB) after he was rescued from Camp 4 of Mt Mulu at Mulu National Park this morning.

Sarawak Fire and Rescue Department director Khirudin Drahman said Akihiro Noda, 25, who had injured his backside and fractured his ribs, was immediately brought to the Miri hospital after the helicopter touched down at 8.40 am in Miri.

“For safety reasons, we had to winch him out of Camp 4 as early as 7.40 am when the weather is better and less cloudy during the  rescue operation dubbed Medivac Mulu Camp 4,” he said.

He said the rescue operation to bring down the injured Japanese researcher, who fell while climbing Mount Mulu two days ago, had to be postponed due to bad weather yesterday.

Khirudin said the PASKUB team had to be on standby in Mulu last night before airlifting the victim from Camp 4, which is situated 1,820 metres above sea level.

Yesterday, a Mulu National Park administration manager alerted the Marudi Fire and Rescue Station of the incident, which occurred at 9 pm on Dec 15.

During the incident, Akihiro, an undergraduate student from Kyoto University in Japan, was climbing Mt Mulu with another Japanese researcher and three porters. – Bernama
