KAPIT: A contractor has been engaged to clear the site of the four houses in Melatai, Jalan Selirik, which were destroyed in a fire on Wednesday.

Tapah Ata, a political secretary to the Chief Minister, relayed the message from Kapit member of parliament Datuk Alexander Nanta Linggi that the move is to pave the way for new houses to be built.

“Datuk Nanta has instructed a contractor to clear the site. He appeals to the four house owners to plan your homes properly. That’s to reserve some space to widen the access road to ensure the free flow of traffic,” he said when visiting the fire victims on Friday.

Tapah pledged that the fire victims would receive help from Nanta, Bukit Goram assemblyman Jefferson Jamit Unyat, and himself.

He also handed over donations of RM3,000 to each household from Parti Pesaka Bumiputera Bersatu (PBB) Baleh, PBB Pelagus, and Nanta.

The fire victims also received monetary aid from the Chelsea Heights Sports and Recreation Club, which was handed over by chairman Edeni Uting, while the Malaysian Red Crescent Kapit and Lions Club of Kapit donated food items such as rice, noodles, sugar, salt, canned food, biscuits, and condensed milk.

MRC Kapit chairman Dr Sia Tih Kong handed over the food items to Tuai Rumah Gon Manggom.

The fire, which broke out shortly after midnight on Wednesday, destroyed four houses and left 20 homeless.
