KUCHING: The overhead pedestrian bridge at Jalan McDougall here has become quite the eyesore as pockets of rubbish are strewn everywhere on the bridge.

The footbridge, which is located between SMK St Thomas and SMK St Mary, is mainly used by students to cross the road safely.

But it appears that the bridge has now become a dumping ground for litterbugs without regard for the environment.

When contacted, Kuching North City Commission (DBKU) Datuk Bandar Datuk Abang Abdul Wahap said the cleaning service for the area was outsourced to a private company.

“They are supposed to do it every other day,” he said when contacted yesterday.

He was surprised to learn of the filthy situation and said he would check to see when the bridge was last cleaned or swept.

“I have also asked our staff to look into the matter first thing tomorrow (today) morning.”

Abdul Wahap said the irresponsible dumping of rubbish at the overhead bridge goes to show the poor civic-mindedness and attitude of the people.

“The uncaring attitude of the public, including the students, who make use of this bridge is a real concern.”
