KOTA SAMARAHAN: Universiti Teknologi Mara (UiTM) Sarawak is planning to cultivate strawberries in a temperature-controlled green house at its farm here soon.

UiTM Sarawak rector Prof Datuk Dr Jamil Hambali said the project will be the first of its kind in Sarawak.

He told reporters during UiTM Sarawak’s Pick and Pack Rambutan programme at UiTM Sarawak’s Samarahan campus yesterday that the project will involve experts from Korea.

“We were approached by the Korean experts and we have agreed to do such project here in our campus. This is a good opportunity for us to do research and help local farmers who have interest in cultivating strawberries,” he said.

Jamil said such strawberries are planted in Korea in the summer, which is why the experts believe the project could succeed in Sarawak.

Meanwhile, Pick and Pack Rambutan participants harvested three varieties of rambutans – Anak Sekolah, Gula Batu, and Gading Muar. The 16-ha farm also plants 15 other types of fruit.
