MIRI: A couple was handed over to Jabatan Agama Islam Sarawak (JAIS) on Saturday when they were caught for being in ‘close proximity’, or khalwat, in a car by the Pujut Resident Committee (JKP).

The JKP team was patrolling a neighbourhood in Jalan Peninsula in Pulau Melayu here around 1.55am on Saturday after receiving a complaint from residents over frequent theft incidents.

While patrolling the area, the team saw a car parked in a dark area and immediately became suspicious of the vehicle.

JKP spokesperson Malateh Mahmud said when they approached the car, they found a couple inside.

“When we checked, we realised they were the same couple we caught before for khalwat.

“This was their second time, therefore we had referred them to the relevant authority for further action,” he said.

It was learnt that the man is married with four children, while the woman is single.
