MIRI: A non-governmental organisation (NGO), Save Sarawak Rivers Network (SAVE Rivers) yesterday launched a publicity campaign on its upcoming conference dubbed ‘Clean Energy Collaboration’ (CEC).
Its chairman Peter Kallang said the conference will be held from March 15 to 16 this year at Pullman Hotel in Kuching.
“The conference is jointly organised by SAVE Rivers, Partners of Community Organisation (PACOS) Trust Sabah and the Indigenous Peoples Network of Malaysia (JOAS).
“This event is supported by the Renewable and Appropriate Energy Lab of University of California, Berkeley.”
He said the event will bring together key stakeholders such as government officials, international and local energy, industry representatives and grassroots communities to deliberate on sustainable and inclusive energy pathways for the country particularly Sarawak.
He pointed out the goal for the conference is to come up with concrete pathways to achieve economically and environmentally sustainable energy systems that address energy poverty and energy needs for development in the country.
“We in SAVE Rivers support sustainable development. We are ready to discuss and cooperate with the state as well as the federal government on sustainable energy.
“We look forward to their long-term participation and cooperation. That is why we are organising the CEC in March.”
Earlier, Kallang announced that a micro hydro project – Micro Hydro Power (MHP) Installation System – implemented at Long Liam in Baram has been successfully completed.
He said the MPH Installation System was officially handed over to the villagers of Long Liam on January 12.
The MHP was built by the villagers with guidance from Civil Society Organisations (CSO) SAVE Rivers, Friends of Village Development (TONIBUNG), the Bruno Manser Fund, Green Empowerment and Seacology.
Also present during the press conference were JOAS’s secretary general Thomas Jalong, TONIBUNG’s project manager Dominic M Usek and the leader for MPH committee for Long Liam Boyce Anyie.
