MIRI: A factory operator managed to avoid being duped by a scammer who pretended to be a police officer demanding payment for a traffic summons.

Sarawak Commercial Criminal Investigation Department head Supt Mustafa Kamal Gani Abdullah said the 29-year-old Kenyah man from Miri had received a call from a man pretending to be a member of the police.

“The man yesterday (Jan 17) received a call from a bogus policeman from the police headquarters (IPD) of Muar, Johor who told him that he was involved in a hit and run case there, but the victim had never been to Johor.

“The suspect then asked for a payment of RM25,000 to resolve the case,” said Mustafa.

The man, who was not amused by the scammer’s attempt, quickly hung up the phone and later lodged a police report as a precaution.
