MIRI: A group of arts and craft enthusiasts here have formed an association called  ‘Persatuan Pelukis dan Seni Visual Miri’ (Miri Arts and Visual Arts Association)  for greater appreciation and development of arts and crafts locally and internationally.

The association, which was registered with the Registrar of Societies (RoS) on October 9, 2018, had its first annual general meeting last Friday evening.

Its founder, Noel Bululok a well-known local artist and a teacher at a secondary school here, was elected as its president, and Mohamad Putit also another well known local artist, his deputy.

Other exco members are Alyssa Chin Min Chien (secretary), Cecilia Sman (assistant secretary), Beatrice Noeh (treasurer), and committee members Affendi Bunchuan, Bill Suut, Nur Fitra Abdul Ghafar, Nuranessa Madahal, Vivi Liew Pei Nyok, Annabel Noeh, and Larry William.

Noel said the association would work closely with local authorities such as Miri City Council (MCC), Sarawak Tourism Board and its counterparts in other states including the National Arts Gallery to organise various activities.

“Sarawak, and Miri in particular, have many talented artists and crafters, and through this association, we hope to work closely to enhance the development and greater appreciation of crafts, arts and visual arts.

To date, we have received good response from our collaborators including MCC to enable us organise our various activities like MCC Miri Heritage Centre Mural project,” he said.

Among other activities to be held this year are the launching of the association and taking part in various exhibitions and sales locally and outside Miri, like Arts exhibitions at Datai Langkawi Hotel in Langkawi.

Noel urged those interested in becoming members to sign up soonest, adding that they now have 24 registered members.

Among the criteria to become members are that they must be Malaysian citizens aged 18 and above, and have talents in arts even in handicraft and traditional music.
