MIRI: Sarawak Goshin-Ryu Karate Do Association is currently intensifying their preparation for two upcoming championships to be held in March this year.

Its president Suryati Hamdan said the exponents are gearing up for the 1st Borneo Open Karate Championship in Brunei and the 39th National Senior Karate Championship in Kuala Lumpur.

“Besides the weekly training, the athletes under the association are undergoing specific training three times a week in the evening,” she stated when contacted by The Borneo Post yesterday.

Suryati added that the association is also planning to send their exponents to other tournaments this year such as Brunei International Open Karate Championship, Malaysia Goju-Ryu Open Karate Championship, SHUREIDO Karate Championship, 30th BRUKAF Anniversary Karate Invitation and Shinobi Cup at Bali, Indonesia.

“The main objective of sending our athletes to this tournaments is to give them exposure and gain more experience so they would be able to enhance their respective skill in martial art.”

She is optimistic that the association can produce a pool of international athletes.

“As the association is based in Miri, we are now in the planning to provide the best sport facilities for Miri division.”

According to Suryati, the association has produced many state and national exponents who won medals in various karate championships at the state, national and international level.

Meanwhile, she said Shihan Al-Harir is the only certified coach for the association. Shihan owned a coaching license from National Sport Council (NSC), and he is also the only karate referee in Sarawak recognised by Malaysia Karate Federation (MAKAF) and Asia Karate Federation (AKF).

On other development, the association held its 10th annual general meeting (AGM) at Petroliam Recreational Club (KRP) in Lutong on Sunday.
