BARIO: The state government is contemplating building a mini fire station in Bario to cater to rising needs and to enhance fire preventive measures in the Kelabit Highlands.

Mulu assemblyman Datuk Gerawat Gala said the proposal for the construction of the fire station came following requests made by the Miri Fire and Rescue Department (Bomba) and the local Bomba volunteer unit.

He explained that such a move should be able to fulfil the demand of the ever-growing population of 14 longhouses as well as eight government offices, two schools and about 16 shops in the highland areas.

“I will discuss with the state government, the Ministry of Local Government and other responsible parties on the construction of a mini fire station in Bario soon.

“If not this year, we hope to be able to build the station next year or in the near future,” he said in his officiating speech at the closing ceremony of Bario Bomba Volunteer Unit Basic Training course at Bario community hall here yesterday.

At the event, Gerawat announced an allocation of RM15,000 from his MRP to the Bario Bomba Volunteer Unit as to encourage them to continue with their training diligently.

“I am very appreciative of our firemen and I will do the best I can to work together with them by supporting them in their activities,” he said.
