KUCHING: STIDC has registered a Pool of Young Designers (POYOD)  for the January intake of a training programme.

These fresh Industrial Design graduates from Unimas started their first one-year industrial training on furniture design at Shin Yang Laminated Board Sdn Bhd, Miri and Giovanni Wood Industries Sdn Bhd in Kuching from Jan 3.

The pool of nine was selected based on assessment and their participation in Furniture Design Competition organised by Unimas and STIDC in 2018.

The POYOD training programme developed by STIDC in collaboration with Unimas, is in line with the corporation’s vision to transform the industry and boost the growth of the furniture industry in Sarawak.

The main objective of this training programme is to make readily available talented and skilled furniture designers in the state furniture industry. The development of the programe is supported by STIDC Board of Management.

“The POYOD programme is a very good programme not only it is the first and the only training programme for fresh graduates in Industrial Design to increase their knowledge and skill in furniture design but it also benefits the timber industry and Sarawak”, said STIDC Board of Management chairman Datuk Amar Awang Tengah Ali Hasan.

The one-year POYOD attachment programme at Shin Yang Laminated Board Sdn Bhd and Giovanni Wood Industries SdnBhd will increase their knowledge and skill on design, production and marketing, to enhance their entrepreneurship skill, thus increasing their marketability and employability in the Sarawak timber industry.

“The training programme will not only enhance fresh graduates’ skill in design but will also greatly benefit the company in developing new markets for furniture internationally”, said STIDC general manager Hashim Bojet.

During the attachment, the POYOD will be trained through completion of projects targeting at international exposures.

Meanwhile, STIDC will participate in international furniture exhibitions in India and Dubai, UAE, this year to promote furniture produced by the company based on designs created by POYOD.

“It is our hope that by participating in these exhibitions it will be a breakthrough for Sarawak furniture internationally,” said Hashim.
