KUCHING: Visitors to Telok Melano are assured that necessary amenities will be fully constructed and ready for use in the near future.

Tanjung Dato assemblywoman Datuk Amar Jamilah Anu said she has made arrangements to meet with the relevant ministries and government agencies to ensure that the necessary facilities such as ample rubbish bins, parking spaces, public toilets and so on are ready for public use as soon as possible.

She explained that it has only been two weeks since the opening of the new road to Telok Melano and the facilities available there are still being implemented.

She mentioned this today in response to viral posts on social media regarding indiscriminate dumping and lack of cleanliness at the normally scenic beaches at Telok Melano, which falls under the Tanjung Dato constituency.

“I feel that all visitors to Telok Melano should be provided with such basic necessities so that their short stay with us is more enjoyable and to ensure that their visit is a worthwhile experience that will make them visit again with their family and friends.”

“As the elected representative for the people at Tanjung Datu, I therefore pledge to do my best in making sure that Telok Melano will become the next best holiday destination for all Sarawakians and to become a new popular tourist attraction here,” she said.

She nonetheless expressed her delight with the overwhelming response from the general public to the new road which was officiated by Chief Minister Datuk Patinggi Abang Johari Tun Openg on Jan 26.

She said that ever since the opening of the new road under the Pan-Borneo Highway initiative, many people from throughout Sarawak were curious about the beautiful scenery that could be found in Telok Melano and its famous beach front which is a two-hour drive from Kuching city.

“As such there was a huge number of people who visited Telok Melano on Feb 5 which is also the first day of the Chinese New Year holidays. Thus, many have voiced their concern over the social media on the inconvenience they had experienced.

“On behalf of the people at Telok Melano, I would like to express our deepest appreciation to all of those who took their time to visit Telok Melano and we also apologise for the inconvenience caused,” she added.

The 33.7km road from Sematan to Telok Melano was the first stretch of the Pan Borneo Highway to be completed. This stretch was also attributed to the vision and commitment of the late Pehin Sri Adenan Satem who had hoped for Telok Melano and Kampung Telok Serabang to flourish from the development here.

The construction on the Sematan – Telok Melano stretch began on Oct 7, 2015 and was fully completed on Jan 4 this year by contractor Samling Resources Sdn Bhd at the cost of about RM580 million.
