MIRI: Sixteen people are left homeless after fire gutted their home at Miri Bypass Road in the wee hours yesterday.

Miri Fire and Rescue Department chief Supt Law Poh Kiong said 11 firefighters from Lopeng Fire and Rescue Station led by senior fire officer II Mohd Fhadil rushed to the scene after receiving a distress call at 3.41am.

“The operation commander reported that the incident involved a single-storey workers’ quarters.

“Ten doors of the workers’ quarters were razed to the ground. Two of the doors were unoccupied while residents of three doors were still in their respective villages and have not returned yet. Only 16 residents from five doors were at home during the fire,” Law said.

He added that five firefighters from Miri Fire and Rescue station later arrived at the scene to help in putting out the fire to prevent it from spreading to nearby houses.

“The fire was completely extinguished at 5.15am, and the cause of the fire has yet to be determined,” he added.
