SK Ulu Pakoh is surrounded by high floodwaters.

SIBU: A section of road leading to Nanga Dangih, Pakoh, Oya in Selangau was cut off on Friday by floodwaters, affecting about 500 residents from more than five longhouses in the area.

It is believed that the affected stretch remains impassable to vehicles as there is yet to be any latest information from authorities on the ground, according to Tamin assemblyman Christopher Gira.

“River transport along Batang Oya is the only alternative for affected residents,” he said when contacted today on the flood situation in Selangau.

He also received reports on some of longhouses affected by floods along Batang Oya, but the water was not at a critical level.

The Selangau multipurpose hall and the SK Tong Ah, Sekuau multipurpose hall can be activated immediately as evacuation centers should the need arise, he explained.

“There are no evacuations thus far, so no evacuation centres have been activated yet in Selangau,” he said.

“We are working closely with the relevant agencies if there is a need for an evacuation.”

Two schools were affected by floods on Friday, namely SK Ulu Pakoh and SK Nanga Kua.

Meanwhile, according to the Selangau District Education Office’s report by SK St Matthew, the water level was rising and at two feet as at 5.30pm on Friday.

No pupils were affected as it was still the school holidays.

Sibu Resident Charles Siaw said all 13 families from Rumah Ling in Kanowit housed at the evacuation center at Kanowit District Council had returned home as flood receded.
