KUCHING: A total of 284 summonses were issued during Ops Motosikal in conjunction with Ops Selamat Tahun Baru Cina 2019 at Jalan Tun Datuk Patinggi Haji Abdul Rahman Yakub on Friday.

During the operation from 8.30pm to midnight, 11 motorcycles were also seized.

The summonses were for offences such as no driving licence (38), expired road tax (45), non-standard licence plates (35), and not wearing helmets (15).

“There are also other offences like eight for bringing excess passengers, 18 for exhaust modification, and 15 for no side mirrors,” said Traffic Investigation and Enforcement Department Sarawak chief Supt Alexson Naga Chabu.

He said special operations like Ops Motosikal are held not to find fault with motorcyclists but to ensure they follow the law as many are involved in accidents.

“The purpose of the operation is to prevent accidents involving motorcyclists. We want to ensure the riders have a licence, motorcycles are in good condition and not modified,” he said.

A total of 50 personnel were involved in the operation.
