KUCHING: A new regulation will be enforced at Telok Melano to ensure the safety and cleanliness of the place for visitors and residents in the scenic coastal village.

Santubong MP Datuk Seri Wan Junaidi Tuanku Jaafar said under the proposed regulation, traders will have to apply for licence from Lundu District Council to carry out businesses in the area.

“The new regulation might be tailored on the one being implemented at Pulau Langkawi,” he told reporters during the presentation of minor rural project (MRP) grants to 57 recipients from non-governmental organisations at his Santubong Parliamentary Service Centre here yesterday.

Wan Junaidi explained: “After the launching of Pan Borneo Highway which connects Telok Melano to Sematan, I have witnessed an influx of visitors not only from our community and also people from our neighbouring country, Indonesia.

“Some of them are conducting their businesses here without licence and we have to stop such situation as we do not want our people especially the residents of Telok Melano to be left out of the development in the area.

“If they (people from Indonesia) want to do business at Telok Melano, they are required to acquire a licence at a higher rate compared with local traders and operate legally in the state.

“They carry out their business in our land and send back the profit while we are forced to collect the rubbish left behind by them,” he stressed.

He added that it is not impossible for the scenic beaches at Telok Melano to be destroyed and polluted if the situation of illegal businesses in the area is not nipped in the bud.

He added that he would convene a meeting with all agencies including Royal Malaysia Police to discuss the new ruling, safety and cleanliness of Telok Melano.

He hoped the community especially visitors will adhere to the new regulation which will soon be implemented.

“I will also hold an informal discussion with Chief Minister Datuk Patinggi Abang Johari Tun Openg to establish Telok Melano as the latest tourism destination in the state.

Touching on the Darul Hana Development Project, he said that he will soon meet with Land Custody and Development Authority (Pelita) general manager Datu Sajeli Kipli to get an update on the project.
