KOTA SAMARAHAN: A total of 429 summonses were issued by the Road Transport Department (JPJ) during special operations on motorcycles held throughout Sarawak, in conjunction with the Lunar New Year celebration.

JPJ Sarawak deputy director Erick Jusiang said the summonses involved various offenses, although the majority involved driving without a licence and having expired road tax.

Speaking to reporters following an operation along the Kuching-Samarahan Expressway here Sunday night, he said the special operations were a multi-agency effort involving the police, Malaysian Anti-Corruption Commission (MACC), National Anti-Drug Agency (AADK), Immigration Department, Department of Environment (DoE), and Padawan Municipal Council.

“For the operation tonight (Sunday), AADK conducted checks on 175 road users and found 24 of them to be positive for drugs, while the police issued 50 summonses for a variety of offences.

“At the same time, the DoE tested 70 different types of vehicles and the Immigration Department conducted checks on 50 foreigners,” he said.

The statewide operations, which began Jan 29, officially end today.

Erick, meanwhile, called on parents to ensure their children not ride motorcycles if they do not have a driving licence, as they would not only endanger themselves but other road users as well.
