KUCHING: One of the two suspects believed to have been involved in a robbery at a shopping mall’s rooftop carpark in Batu Kawa here on Wednesday night was arrested by police in Jalan Temple around 9.30pm on Thursday.
According to Padawan district deputy chief DSP Merbin Lisa, the 39-year-old suspect also admitted that he was involved in the incident together with another suspect who is still at large.
“Further investigations also revealed that the arrested suspect has nine previous police records for crime and drug abuse,” said Merbin in a press statement yesterday.
Also seized was the multi-purpose vehicle used by both suspects to make their getaway after committing the crime.
“We urge those with information on the whereabouts of the second suspect to contact the police,” he added.
The case he said is being investigated under Section 394 of the Penal Code for robbery.
A video of the incident which was recorded by the mall’s CCTV was viralised on social media.
Based on the CCTV’s date stamp, it took place around 9.15pm on Wednesday (Feb 20) at the mall’s carpark.
In the video, two men were seen at their vehicle when they spotted the victim who was said to be waiting for her husband.
One of the men then approached the woman while showing her a piece of white paper before grabbing her handphone.
During the ensuing scuffle, the victim was eventually relieved of her handphone when the other man came to the aid of his accomplice.
