About 150 people attend mangrove awareness programme

KUCHING: Sarawak Forest Department, together with Ombudsman and Integrity Unit, conducted a mangrove awareness programme at Kuching Wetland National Park here in conjunction with World Wetland Day yesterday.

It was attended by about 150 personnel from the Forest Department, Ombudsman and Integrity Unit, Japan Malaysia Association, Sarawak Badan Amal Tenaga Isteri-Isteri (Sabati), students and teachers from Universiti Malaysia Sarawak (Unimas), and villagers in the vicinity.

Minister in the Chief Minister’s Office (Integrity and Ombudsman) Datuk Talib Zulpilip officiated at the programme, and shared the importance of planting trees for the sake of future generation.

He added that illegal logging should be halted immediately so that natural forest could be preserved and safeguarded.

A talk conducted by Forest Department forest conservation officer Irmadiana Ardi was also held during the programme.

According to Irmadiana, forest covered 65 per cent of Sarawak landmass with a total of 1.8 million hectares classified as Total Protected Areas such as the Kuching Wetland National Park.
