KUCHING: The Customs Department here recorded its first drug bust of the year with the arrest of a 45-year-old man and seizure of over 3kg of Syabu.

Sarawak Customs director Dato Sharifah Halimah Tuanku Taha said the suspect was recently detained at a courier service company here with a total of 3.034kg of methamphetamine worth RM151,700.

“It is believed that drug syndicates are using the courier service to deliver drugs in parcels which are traceable through the courier’s tracking sites,” she said in a statement yesterday.

She added that in 2018, the narcotics branch of Sarawak Customs seized a variety of drugs worth RM1.7 million.

The suspect, meanwhile, has been remanded until March 2 for investigation under Section 39B of the Dangerous Drug Act 1952, which is punishable by the mandatory death penalty on conviction.
