Ambulance carrying pregnant woman broadsided, overturns at traffic lights

The ambulance lies on its side after the accident.

KUCHING: An ambulance overturned after it was struck by a sports utility vehicle (SUV) at the junction of Jalan Tun Ahmad Zaidi Adruce here today.

It was understood that the ambulance was in the midst of transporting a pregnant woman from Kota Samarahan to the Sarawak General Hospital (SGH).

“Upon reaching the junction of the traffic light, an SUV coming from the direction of Jalan Green was be unable to stop in time and crashed into the side of the ambulance, causing it to overturn,” said a source.

A video being circulated on social media shows the SUV crashing into the side of the ambulance as it tries to maneuver past the traffic lights, which had turned green in the direction that the SUV was coming from. Other vehicles managed to stop in time.

The 40-year-old pregnant woman from Kampung Nakong, Samarahan along with the ambulance driver and passengers were quickly rushed to SGH for treatment.

The driver and a nurse of the ambulance escaped from the accident unscathed while another nurse suffered light injuries in the crash.

The woman was 34 weeks pregnant and on her way to the hospital to treat her high sugar levels when the accident occurred.

She has been referred to the SGH’s Red Zone for further examination.

The case is currently being investigated under Section 43 (1) of the Road Transport Act 1987.
