Proposed works on coastal bunds meant to stop saltwater from entering Sebangan-Bajong AIS

SEBUYAU: A discussion is underway regarding the proposed rehabilitation works on the coastal bunds slated for the Sebangan-Bajong Agriculture Integrated Scheme (AIS), which would serve to minimise the intrusion of saltwater into the area.

According to Assistant Minister of Coastal Road Datuk Julaihi Narawi, the presence of saltwater has been adversely affecting the agricultural activities in the AIS area, which was a different situation back in the 1990s when the bunds were still in good working condition.

“The Sebangan-Bajong AIS is a fertile area, but the intrusion of saltwater has reduced farming activities.

“So now, it is very important to seek ways to improve the coastal protection in the area,” he told reporters when met after accompanying Deputy Chief Minister Datuk Amar Douglas Uggah Embas during a visit to the area yesterday.

On the new bridge and road projects for Kampung Buntal as announced by Chief Minister Datuk Patinggi Abang Johari Tun Openg on Sunday, Julaihi said the Sarawak government was still working on that plan.

“The projects are already being planned, and we are still finalising them,” he pointed out.

On Sunday, Abang Johari said the Saarwak government would construct a bridge crossing Buntal River, as well as a 85km road connecting Kampung Buntal and Santubong via Buntal, at a cost of RM85 million.
