MIRI: Riam Road Secondary School (RRSS) emerged as MSS Miri Inter-Secondary School Sports Meet champions for eighth consecutive time to mark their supremacy in the annual event.

RRSS has been dominating the meet for years, except in 2018 as it was cancelled due to repair work at the Miri Stadium.

The school’s athletes created four new state records and bagged five out of six best athlete awards in the four-day tournament, which was held on Feb 25-26 and March 1-2.

The state records came from Brendon Ting Li King (triple jump), Russell Chin Jia Kang (octathlon), Justin Lihan Lucas (200m) and Rueben Valen Samen Willie (triple jump).

Three were named best athletes, and they were Brendon Ting (Boys U-18), Justin (Boys U-15) and Rueben (Boys U-14).

Other award winners were Ruby Lee Jia Lu (Girls U-18) and Voon Pei Ling (Girls U-14).

“The most remarkable achievement in the athletics meet is the smashing of four state (MSS Sarawak) records by our athletes – an added glory to RRSS – a renowned Chinese independent school and also first 5-star school award winner in 2013,” RRSS chief executive officer Datuk Dr Fong Onn Min told The Borneo Post yesterday.

RRSS created 17 new records out of the total 24 in the meet.

RRSS also won four out of six categories, namely Boys U-18, Boys U-15, Boys U-14, and Girls U-14.

They finished first and second runners-up in Girls U-18 and U-15 respectively.

The titles went to schools who were represented by athletes from sports schools.

“We are very proud with our athletes’ excellent results.

“They may lose some points and gold medals to some sports school athletes, but we win our dignity and self-respect.

“In sport, we must win with pride, and lose with honour… In sports, there is no eternal winning, only eternal efforts,” he stressed.

A total of 1,040 athletes from 30 schools in Miri took part in the meet.
