Man gets 10 years’ jail, RM50,000 fine for insulting Islam on Facebook

KUCHING: A man from Singai, Bau has pleaded guilty to uploading on social media offensive materials about Islam and Prophet Muhammad.

Alister Cogia, 22, whose Facebook account is named ‘Ayea’, pleaded guilty before Sessions Court Judge Jason Juga yesterday, to five charges under Section 298A (1)(a) of the Penal Code, and five charges under Section 233 of the Multimedia and Communications Act 1998.

The accused was sentenced to a total of 10 years in prison and a fine of RM50,000 for all 10 charges.

Alister was charged with posting the offensive remarks on Facebook at 7.11pm on Feb 9, at 12.56am on Feb 10, at 1.28am on Feb 14, at 10pm on Feb 24, and at 10.05pm also on Feb 24.

He was apprehended at a house in Singai around 12.15am on March 3 this year.

Sarawak head of prosecution Isa Hashim and deputy public prosecutor Nor Azhari prosecuted, while Alister was unrepresented.
