KUCHING: The Pakatan Harapan (PH) government should offer the 10 per cent discount and 20 per cent rebate to all Perumahan Rakyat 1Malaysia (PR1MA) buyers indefinitely.

Not only should there be no limit to the offer, it should benefit PR1MA buyers and owners across the board, suggested Sarawak United People’s Party (SUPP) Youth secretary Milton Foo yesterday.

“Deputy Minister of Domestic Trade and Consumer Affairs Chong Chieng Jen said PR1MA houses implemented by the previous government are overpriced.

“If this is the case, shouldn’t the government be offering a lifetime discount and rebate?” he said at a press conference at the SUPP headquarters here.

Foo said it made no sense for Chong, who is Democratic Action Party (DAP) Stampin MP and Kota Sentosa assemblyman, to allege that the overpriced PR1MA houses were meant to enable cronies of the previous government to make huge unreasonable profits.

He said Chong should have evidence to substantiate such claim, and the DAP lawmaker ought to report the case to the Malaysian Anti-Corruption Commission (MACC).

“Stop the wild talk but walk to the MACC to complain. Chong is elected to protect the interest of the people, do not just offer lip service,” pointed out Foo.

He said now that the DAP is part of the federal government, it would be easy for the DAP to request for the rebate to be offered across the board.

“It’s easy, Chong can just talk to (Prime Minister Tun) Dr Mahathir (Mohamad). In fact, they can even bring down the prices for all PR1MA home buyers since Chong is the one who says they are overpriced.”

He also wondered if Chong realised that PR1MA houses were meant for the M40 group rather than the B40 group.

According to Foo, PR1MA houses are offered for individuals with monthly income between RM2,500 and RM15,000.

He said previous PR1MA home buyers should approach the developer PR1MA itself if they wanted to request for the same discount and rebate.

“Why did Chong tell these buyers to approach Pending assemblywoman Violet Yong for an appeal to the government? Is Chong not aware that PR1MA is the developer, and that PR1MA is directly under the Prime Minister’s Department?”

On Sunday, Chong at a press conference called upon previous PR1MA home buyers to approach Yong if they wanted to enjoy the same discount and rebate.

Chong said Yong would help these individuals submit their appeal to the federal government but was quick to add that the appeal might not be successful.
