KUCHING: A 36-year-old male victim plunged into the Sarawak River after he fell off the Darul Hana Bridge at the Kuching Waterfront at around 9pm today.

According to the Fire and Rescue Department (Bomba), the victim was found alive but unconscious after a team from the Padungan fire station was rushed to the scene.

He was rescued by a boat man who was coincidentally passing by the middle section of the bridge, where the man fell off.

The victim, from Miri, was subsequently rushed to the Sarawak General Hospital for treatment.

According to the boat man, he had heard a loud splash and upon closer inspection, realised someone had fallen into the river.

He then hurried to the victim, but was unable to carry him aboard. With quick thinking, he threw the victim a rope and managed to pull him to the riverbank, where rescue workers were waiting.

It is still unclear if the victim had slipped or had intended to jump off the bridge.
