Drug dealer sentenced to death for possession of meth

TAWAU: A 41-year-old drug dealer was sentenced to death by the High Court here today for pushing 75.56 grams of syabu (methamphetamine).

High Court Judge Dr Haji Alwi Haji Abdul Wahab meted out the sentence on Rashid Osman, who was charged under Section 39B(1)(a) of the Dangerous Drug Act and can be sentenced under Section 39B(2) of the same Act which provides the mandatory death sentence.

After hearing the submissions by the counsels, Judge Dr Alwi sentenced the accused to be hanged to death.

The accused, a Filipino without any identification documents, committed the crime on Sept 7, 2016 at about 2pm at the roadside area of Kampung Kurnia Jaya, Mile 4, Apas Road. He was found with 75.56 grams of the drug.

The case that went on full trial saw the deputy public prosecutor calling four witnesses while the accused testified for himself.

Deputy public prosecutor Khairunnizam Ideris prosecuted the case while the accused was defended by counsel Kusni Ambutowo.
