Senior citizen denies abused by children, claims injury due to fall


BUKIT MERTAJAM: An elderly woman who was found injured yesterday and believed to have been abused and locked up by her children in their home at the Flat Sri Desa Wawasan, here claimed her injuries were caused by a fall.

Seberang Perai Tengah District Police Chief ACP Nik Ros Azhan Nik Abdul Hamid today said even though checks by a doctor found that the victim had been beaten, the 64-year-old woman denied she was hit by her son, 32.

“According to the doctor who treated her, the victim suffered wounds throughout her body, including on her back and head, and bruises throughout her body, and there were also suspected old injuries on her.

”The victim’s condition is stable and she is still receiving treatment at the Bukit Mertajam Hospital, and  based on her severe injuries, the doctors treating her suspect she had been beaten and abused.

He said police will conduct further investigations including getting the full medical report on the woman and recording statements from the neighbours and others with information relating to the incident.

Nik Ros Azhan said the woman lived in her home with her son, daughter, 35, and daughter-in-law, 36, and was always left alone if they went out begging as they were unemployed.

He said investigations found that the family received aid from the zakat office and the Social Welfare Department, but went out begging when they ran out of money.

“Initial investigations found that the reason (for the alleged abuse) was connected to family and financial issues, as well as stress which led to them being deprived of food,” he said, adding that the woman’s son who allegedly abused her was the fourth of seven siblings. – Bernama
