Woman gets jail time, fine for bogus land deals

KUCHING: A 42-year-old businesswoman pleaded guilty to 13 charges of cheating over non-existent land deals totalling RM192,000 in three Magistrate’s Courts today.

In the first Magistrate’s Court, Magistrate Mohd Syukri Mohktar sentenced the accused Chai Hui Sya to two-and-half years in jail each for four charges and ordered the sentence to run concurrently.

Chai was also fined RM3,000 for each of these charges.

In the second Magistrate’s Court, Magistrate Zubaidah Sarkawi sentenced Chai to two years in jail and ordered the jail term to run concurrently for all three charges.

In the third Magistrate’s Court, Magistrate Faely Jeffrey Lanjungan sentenced Chai to one year in jail each and the jail term to run concurrently for three charges.

Faelly also sentenced her to another two-and-half years in jail each for additional three charges and ordered for jail term to run concurrently.

The jail term is to run from March 18, 2019 (Monday) which was the date of her arrest.

Chai, who was convicted under Section 420 of the Penal Code, was not represented by any counsel at the courthouse today.

She committed these 13 cheating offences between February and August 2017.
