MIRI: Greater community participation is vital in combating bushfires that have been prevalent not only in this division but also throughout Sarawak of late.
Head of Fire and Rescue Department here Law Poh Kiong said bushfire management was a shared responsibility, and needed to be addressed at every one in the community
The responsibility should not only be laid on shoulders of fire personnel but on everyone, including those at the grassroots level, he said.
“Community leaders are also urged to advise their charges not to conduct open burning, and to help extinguish small fires in their areas.
“This is important so that our air quality is not affected, otherwise there will be an increase in the number of patients with respiratory problems,” he added.
Meanwhile, measures to ensure the level of optimum air quality here continued yesterday.
An Emergency Response Team from Naim Holdings Sdn Bhd (ERT Naim) yesterday conducted a fire fighting operation near Miri Industrial Training Institute (ILP) to reduce the smoke, which causes the hazy condition.
Fire and Rescue Department also reported that the fire in Tudan was under control.
