KUCHING: The Malaysian Meteorological Department (MetMalaysia) issued a Level 1 alert today for Sri Aman and Kapit Divisions amidst the ongoing heatwave.

The alerts were issued at 4.40pm today after these areas experienced maximum temperatures of between 35°C and 37°C for three consecutive days.

Other parts in Sarawak are reported to be experiencing maximum temperatures of less than 35°C.

According to MetMalaysia, a Level 2 alert is issued when the maximum temperature exceeds 37°C for three consecutive days. Declared by the Energy, Science, Technology, Environment and Climate Change Ministry (MESTECC), the alert allows relevant agencies to take appropriate emergency action, such as closing schools.

A Level 3 alert is declared when the temperature exceeds 40°C for three consecutive days. The announcement would be made by the National Disaster Management Agency (Nadma) and paves the way for the Prime Minister to declare a state of emergency.

In a report published on its website, MetMalaysia said Malaysia was experiencing a weak El Nino (irregular weather phenomenon) but did not expect any abnormal hot weather as what occurred during the 2016 and 1998 El Nino weather phenomenons.

It also mentioned that the current dry weather and higher temperatures are normally experienced in the country due to less rainfall as it is now the end of the north-east monsoon period.

“This dry weather is expected to subside starting April 2019 with more rainfall due to the transition of the monsoon period,” it said.

It also advised the public to take extra care when undertaking outdoor activities during this period, and avoid doing open burning. The public are also advised to stay hydrated by drinking plenty of water.
