SIBU: Works to upgrade the stretch of Lanang Road from Mission Road to Ek Dee Road, costing about RM3.5 million, is expected to be completed within three months’ time, according to Sibu Municipal Council (SMC) deputy chairperson Rogayah Jamain.

She disclosed yesterday that works started on March 17.

“The works cover both sides of the stretch,” she added.

She said the upgrading is needed as the overall road surface is poor and undulating.

“It will be raised as part of the flood-mitigation measures,” she said.

Meanwhile, traders at Sibu Central Market have started trading at temporary stalls erected at the open mall area of Sibu Central Market, to facilitate the upgrading of the central market.

Work began on March 1 and is expected to be completed by October. Among others, it will improve ventilation and the supply of piped water there.

Rogayah said the upgrading covers the pork stall area, ground floor and the first floor.

“The 16 pork stall holders and all vendors on the ground floor will move to the temporary stalls in four phases,” she added.

Sibu Central Market currently houses about 1,000 hawkers.
