MIRI: The Sarawak National Kenyah Association (PKKS) is looking at forming an independent youth section this year.
In relation to this, Murum assemblyman Kennedy Chukpai Ugon, who is PKKS president, said the association established its independent women’s section ‘Leto Kenyah Baram’ last year.
This section is touted the first of its kind among the nine Orang Ulu associations under the Federation of Orang Ulu Associations of Sarawak, Malaysia (Forum).
On this, Kennedy had been very impressed by Leto Kenyah Baram, which had been very busy with activities since its formation.
As such, he wanted the same for the proposed youth section.
“We want the Kenyah youths, regardless of their sub-ethnicity, to come together and contribute, in that they are the assets and successors of leadership in our community.
“I hope this year, there would be those from our younger generation who would form PKKS Youth because we want the Kenyahs under PKKS to become more active,” Kennedy said during PKKS’ seventh tri-annual delegates conference at Piasau Boat Club here last Saturday.
On a separate subject, Kennedy observed that in recent years, PKKS had made several improvements on its constitution.
“Our constitution should be dynamic and be in accordance with the times. We must always make renewals.
“So I hope that more positive ideas or proposals could be discussed together and brought up during this conference for the benefit of the Kenyah community,” he added.
Mulu assemblyman Datuk Gerawat Gala was also present at the conference.
