MIRI: The Miri Single Mothers Association is urged to go all out not only to address the welfare and needs of members, but also uplift the living standard of their families.
The reminder came from Assistant Minister of Tourism, Arts and Culture Datuk Lee Kim Shin, who said the association is the best platform to fight for the members’ various interests.
“Miri Single Mothers Association under Social and Welfare Harmony Club has been set up for more than 10 years already.
“I am happy to note that the association has been helping many single mothers and their children in every aspect and bringing positive change to their lives,” he stated in his address when officiating at the Miri Single Mothers Association annual general meeting (AGM) at Merdeka Suite Hotel yesterday.
Thus, Lee, who is also advisor to the association, called upon single mothers who are yet to join the association to come forward and sign up as members.
He further said the association should be the driving force and guide the members on how to be successful in life and their career.
Besides that, he suggested that association could also motivate children of members to pursue higher education.
“Education is the key to changing your living standard. Thus, being poor and financially handicapped should not discourage children from pursuing higher education in light of the many channels of aid available nowadays.
“In this aspect, the association has truly triumphed in education aspect as many of the members’ children are now in good professions such as lawyers, engineers and many others.”
He commended the association for giving assistance in the form of school fees and bus fares, including stationery, uniforms and free tuition, to members’ children besides providing assistance to single mothers to improve their standard of living.
At the same time, he also called on the society to give their full moral support to single mothers, especially their children.
“Nobody wants to be a single mother. Sometimes they are due to circumstances. Their future depends on our support.
“Without the support from the society these children will not have a good and bright future.”
Later, he presented a government grant of RM50,000 to the association.
