Technician gets 6 years’ jail, whipping for drug

KUCHING: A technician with a fast food chain was sentenced to six years in jail and 10 strokes of the cane after he pleaded guilty to an amended charge of drug possession before the High Court here yesterday.

Mohamad Zuharmie Mohamad Haruddin, 27, was initially charged with trafficking 483.5 grammes of cannabis (ganja), an offence that carries the death penalty on conviction.

He possessed the drug (ganja) at a courier company premises located in Taman Green Heights here around 9am on Feb 14 last year.

In his mitigation, submitted by his defence counsel Roger Chin, Zuharmie said he is married, a first time offender, and that he has regretted his action.

Zuharmie was convicted under Sections 6 and 39A (2) of the Dangerous Drugs Act, 1952.
