MIRI: The National Craft Institute (IKN) is introducing a new six-month Sijil Kemahiran Malaysia (SKM) course in July for Malaysian youths between 16 and 30 years who dropped out of school or do not possess PMR or SPM qualifications.

“There is an estimated 2,000 dropouts in Malaysia and even if 30 signed up for this course in July, it would help them chart a much brighter future,” said Hamidah Rosly, IKN assistant officer for Economic Affairs from Students Affair Unit on Wednesday at the side of National Craft Festival (FKK) in Bintang Mega Mall here.

She said the new course will offer six modules similar to certificate and diploma courses in Batik Craft, Textile Weaving Craft, Ceramic Craft, Wood Craft, Metal Craft and Rattan Arts although entry requirements are different from full-time certificate and diploma courses in IKN Rawang, Selangor.

Hamidah urged parents from Sarawak to encourage their children to take up craft skills at IKN as graduates became successful entrepreneurs or got good employment in related industry.

She said those in and around Miri can enrol or get more details from officers at the existing Craft Festival in Bintang Megamall from 10am to 10pm. The festival ends tomorrow.

Alternatively, enrol online or obtain further details at www.ikn.gov.my or www.kraftangan.gov.my or WhatsApp Hamidah at 012-2720295 or call 03-60915322 during office hours.

Student intake for 2019 session is still open until May 31.
