KUCHING: Police are still searching for the driver responsible for the hit-and-run accident that killed a newspaper distributor at Jalan Tun Jugah here last Friday.

State Traffic Investigation and Enforcement Department chief Supt Alexson Naga Chabu said that as of yesterday, nobody had stepped forward to take responsibility.

“Checks on the car revealed that it was registered under a company’s name, but we found out that the company was shut down upon further investigation,” he said in a statement yesterday.

Alexson called for public cooperation to disseminate any information regarding the incident to the police.

“We urge anybody who knows the identity of the driver to come forward and help in the investigation, or contact any nearby police station,” he said.

It is believed that the victim, Chong Kui Hin, 67, was heading from town towards Kuching International Airport at 6.15am last Friday, when he was hit from behind by a BMW sedan, causing him to be thrown off his motorcycle, and suffering fatal head injuries. The BMW driver, however, abandoned the vehicle near Kuching Sentral, where it was discovered by police.

The deceased was later sent to Sarawak General Hospital’s (SGH) Forensics Department for further action.

The police are still investigating the case under Section 41(1) of the Road Transport Act 1987.
