KOTA KINABALU: In conjunction with the world’s largest grassroots movement, the Hilton Kota Kinabalu showed its continued support for Earth Hour 2019 by going beyond the hour in creating environmental and conservation awareness for its team members through its plethora of activities since earlier of the week.

The Human Resources Department led by the hotel’s learning and development manager, Lily Hiew championed the ‘no bin day’ menu served in the team members’ restaurant to increase awareness on food wastage and the impact to the environment including a staircase race to encourage team members from using the elevators less and reduce their carbon footprint.

Purchasing manager and chief engineer, Ng Tze Sai and Justin Liew championed the setup of a vegetables and herbs garden by using recycled materials that will, in the future, sustainably provide the hotel with eight types of fresh ingredients for all of the hotel’s restaurants which will ultimately reduce the environmental impact that are associated with logistics and packaging when sourcing for raw materials.

Shuras Bathumalai, the hotel’s chief of safety and security led the group in cleaning up the hotel’s surrounding area including Asia City, while Amshari Yunin, the assistant executive housekeeper championed the Earth Hour energy saving initiative that culminated with the switching off of non-essential lights and electrical appliances in the hotel from 8.30pm  to 9.30pm.

Leading the hotel in this movement was the hotel’s general manager, Linda Pecoraro who is passionate about environmental conservation and how important it is to certain places such as Sabah, where tourism is one of the biggest contributors to the state’s economy.

“As part of Hilton’s Travel with Purpose, Earth Hour is just one of the many global movements that the hotel is participating to cut our environmental footprint. At the moment, we are committed in eradicating single use plastic in the hotel through Hilton’s global no plastic campaign that took off last year,” Linda said.

Since its opening in 2016, Hilton Kota Kinabalu is an avid supporter to earth hour and other global and local environmental conservation and preservation initiatives.
