UCSI University to conduct ‘Smart Tourism, Smart Destination’ forum

KUCHING: UCSI University Sarawak Campus will conduct a three-day forum on ‘Smart Tourism, Smart Destination’ from April 12.

The forum, carrying the theme ‘Advancing Innovative and Sustainable Tourism and Hospitality’, is organised by Sarawak Research Society and supported by Ministry of Tourism, Arts, Culture, Youth and Sports.

The forum aims to achieve the objectives of enhancing tourism and hospitality industry in Sarawak with innovation and technology, and to enhance tourism destination to the largest market with effective positioning strategy.

Topics to be covered in the forum include leveraging online travel agency to strengthen digital marketing and data mining for sales enhancement, and also ways to attract tourists from China in a sustainable manner.

The keynote speaker will be Daniel Cheng, the founder and president of Redefine Tourism Mixer (RTM) Association – the biggest community of travel start-ups and tourism tech entrepreneurs in Taiwan.

With Chief Minister Datuk Patinggi Abang Johari Tun Opening championing the initiative of digital economy, Sarawak Research Society chairman Dr Hiram Ting said the forum also aims to complement the government’s efforts in promoting Sarawak tourism.

“This forum is not just about teaching theories related to tourism and hospitality but also to provide practical guidance on how the industry players can achieve ‘Smart Tourism, Smart Destination,” he said at a press conference held at UCSI University Sarawak campus in Jalan Keruing here yesterday.

Ting, who is also UCSI University Sarawak Campus Faculty of Hospitality and Tourism Management Assistant Professor, said that technology and innovation play key roles in driving our economy especially in this digital era.

Minister of Tourism, Arts, Culture, Youth and Sports Datuk Abdul Karim Rahman Hamzah is expected to officiate at the forum.
