KOTA KINABALU: The Sabah Tourism Board (STB) building came alive with a beautiful display of lights  last night in an event called the “Lampoopalooza”.

The event, which was launched by Tourism, Culture and Environment minister, Datuk Christina Liew attracted throngs of people, including tourists.

Christina, in her speech said the event was testimony of the many possibilities for tourism activities in Sabah.

She also said her ministry was marketing Gaya Street as many other famous streets around the world.

“This is our very own version of high street with a history going back to more than 100 years. Tonight, we mark the anniversary of the building (behind me) by appreciating the heritage, history and the perspectives of turning this street into a modern event site. This bold move will certainly raise Kota Kinabalu’s prominence into the most vibrant city on Borneo island,” she said.

She added that it was pertinent for her ministry to push the Sabah brand further and to maintain a good image.

“We need to compete with other destinations and rise to international standards.”

She said her visits overseas had allowed her to see the  expressions of art by the communities and the respective city councils fully embracing them.

“This must be one of the directions that we aim for, for a vibrant Kota Kinabalu. My ministry has great emphasis on developing and promoting traditional as well as modern arts, as what we expect to see tonight,” she said.
