Sarawak govt to build 2,500 affordable homes in next two years

KUCHING: The Sarawak government will construct more than 2,500 affordable houses, known as ‘Rumah Spektra’, in the next two years.

According to Minister of Local Government and Housing Datuk Dr Sim Kui Hian, some of the housing projects are on-going, while others are still in the planning stage.

He points out that the projects are scattered all over Sarawak, and the houses are meant for those whose monthly household income is below RM3,000.

“The construction of 1,013 units is on-going, while another 1,516 units are still in the planning stage. The government has allocated RM100 million for end-financing, which will be provided by Mutiara Mortage and Credit Sdn Bhd,” Dr Sim told reporters during a press conference at Vivacity Megamall here yesterday.

On prices, Dr Sim said they would vary according to types – single-storey terraced, single-storey detached and apartment units would be between RM90,000 and RM160,000.

The on-going projects are at Darul Hana here with 560 units, Bunga Rampai here (122 units), Kemuyang in Sibu (110 units), Lundu (26 units), Sematan (25 units), Igan in Mukah (22 units), Tian in Matu (20 units) and Rangau in Limbang (128 units).

Those under planning involve 200 units at Tabuan Melayu here, Permyjaya in Miri (278 units), Lundu (240 units), Kanowit Phase II (98 units), Sibuloh in Bau (164 units), Spaoh in  Betong (162 units), Kampung Salak in Kuching (224 units), Sambir in Samarahan (50 units), Sebuyau (50 units) and Betong (50 units).

According to Dr Sim, the Sarawak government is still negotiating with Bintulu Development Authority (BDA) to acquire land for a similar project in Bintulu.
