SIBU: Bintulu MP Datuk Seri Tiong King Sing said the recent Bill seeking to amend Article 1(2) of the Federal Constitution did not reflect the spirit of Malaysia Agreement 1963 (MA63).

In a press statement yesterday, he said the Bill was drafted ‘just to please and calm down the people of Sarawak’.

He reminded Sarawak MPs from Pakatan Harapan (PH) to fully understand the content of MA63, and to not play up the issue to achieve personal political gain.

“As members of Parliament representing the people, be responsible and be answerable to the people.

“Remember, this was what you had promised the voters during your election campaign. Don’t take your promise for granted.”

In the statement, Tiong also quipped about the PH MPs claiming that they had accomplished the task in just a year, after the people had waited for 42 years.

He further added that the amendment was not done in the spirit of MA63 and for this reason, he was totally against it.

“I wish to stress again – what is in the amendment lacks the spirit of MA63; it has nothing to do with the restoration of our autonomous power.”
