Accommodation services record higher gross output value in 2017

KUALA LUMPUR: The gross output value of accommodation services rose to RM15.8 billion in 2017 from RM13.9 billion in 2015, with the annual growth rate value of 6.7 per cent, said the Department of Statistics.

Chief Statistician Datuk Seri Dr Mohd Uzir Mahidin said in line with growth in the value of gross output, the value of intermediate input also increased by RM0.8 billion to record RM6.8 billion, with the annual growth rate of 6.2 per cent, resulting in value added of RM9.0 billion in 2017.

“The number of people engaged in this sector increased 3.3 per cent to 139,410 persons compared with 130,675 in 2015.

“Meanwhile, the salaries and wages paid in 2017 amounted to RM3.5 billion compared with RM3.0 billion in 2015,” he said in a statement yesterday.

Kuala Lumpur remained the main contributor to the gross output value for accommodation services in 2017, registering value worth RM4,137.4 million, up by 26.1 per cent compared with RM3,702.7 million in 2015.

This was followed by Selangor and Pahang with gross output value of RM2,279.0 million (14.4 per cent) and RM1,433.0 million (9.1 per cent), respectively.

Meanwhile, the accommodation services employed 130,397 paid full-time employees, which accounted for 93.5 per cent of the workforce, followed by 5,985 paid part-time employees, and 3,028 working owners proprietors and unpaid family workers.

Of the total number of paid full-time employees, 55,853 are in the clerical and related occupations, followed by those in elementary occupations at 47,828, and managers, professionals and researchers at 16,881. — Bernama
