KUCHING: McDonald’s Malaysia garnered the Halal Corporate Social Responsibility (CSR) Excellence Award last week during the World Halal Conference 2019.

The award is an initiative by the Halal Industry Development Corporation (HDC) to recognise companies that have demonstrated an ongoing commitment in incorporating ethical values, compliance with legal requirements, and respect for individuals, communities, and the environment in the way they do business.

“We are very honoured to receive this award at the World Halal Conference 2019. This award underscores the team’s commitment and continued efforts in giving back to communities, which is a core value of McDonald’s Malaysia,” said McDonald’s Malaysia managing director and local operating partner, Azmir Jaafar.

With a strong sense of community, McDonald’s Malaysia is committed to making a positive impact in the community. In 2018 alone, the company carried out over 10,000 community engagement activities.

These include zakat contribution, recruitment of asnaf youths for McDonald’s apprenticeship programme under the Ministry of Human Resources’ National Dual Training System, and the “Back-to-School” programme – in which 17,000 primary school children from urban poor families received school packs.

Azmir was also a speaker at the Captains of Industry Panel titled ‘Global Halal Industry in 2030 – A Vision’, where he shared McDonald’s Malaysia’s best Halal practices.

According to Azmir, the company models their food sourcing, preparation, handling, and storage based on the strict Halal requirements set by the Department of Islamic Development Malaysia (JAKIM).

“At McDonald’s Malaysia, we apply rigorous measures in terms of choosing suppliers and raw materials. We only work with Halal-certified food suppliers with the highest cleanliness and stringent quality standards on par with the best global practices,” said Azmir.
